LOCK HAVEN — A new yoga studio opens with an outlet for red light therapy.

Yoga instructor Trudy Fritts opened her studio on the third floor of the Piper Building May 8. With 37 years of experience, she has lengthy experience with the benefits of yoga. Her space has enough room for 25 people per yoga session.

Collectively, Fritts is a registered Phoenix Rising Yoga therapist and a member of the Yoga Alliance provider. With the Yoga Alliance, she is able to certify new instructors online over 30 hours of training. To be with the Yoga Alliance, members must continue the 30 hours of training every three years, according to Fritts. Phoenix Rising Yoga is a type of therapy through yoga which tackles healing and mental health. These sessions are by appointment only with Fritts.

She has held classes all over, including sessions at local universities such as Lycoming College, Lock Haven University, Bucknell University and Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Along with yoga, Fritts specializes in a form of therapy by a red light bed by Trifecta Light. Red light therapy is also by appointment only. Fritts will then conduct a symptom survey and work closely with a doctor prior to the treatment. Each session lasts about 12 minutes. Fritts discovered the usage of red light therapy after injuring her foot. Having conducted aerobic classes prior to yoga, she hurt her foot in the process.

“I used a red light once when I was in training in California. I had an injury and, at that time, I was a fitness instructor at a YMCA teaching way too many aerobic classes. I had a real sore foot… I could barely walk and I did this red light on my foot… After I got home, I started studying it and I felt better. A couple of months after that, I went to get a certification and It went on from there,” Fritts said.

From there she solely focused on healing and the health benefits of yoga.

According to Trifecta Light, a company who specializes in red light beds, red light therapy is known to be the safest non-invasive body shaping and health enhancing technologies. The LED light penetrates a fat cell in the body and alters the permeability of the cell wall.

People are encouraged to drink water prior to the session. They can’t drink alcohol 40 hours before or after treatment due to lymphatic drainage through the liver.

“Our livers have to process any fat that’s broken down, any lymphatic drainage,” Fritts said.

People in the treatment program have to have a food regiment and at least 6-8 sessions to lose five pounds. More sessions help increase the amount of weight lost, according to Fritts.

Red Light Therapy also aids the body in producing more collagen and elastin. Through this, red light can help improve aging skin for fine lines and wrinkles, according to Fritts.

Red Light Therapy is also good for arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis and more, according to Fritts. The bed has different settings on it for its different uses. The beds are used by sports teams, especially those in the NFL. The Trifecta Light bed that Fritts has is the same kind used by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“They use it for muscle recovery, when there are injuries, after folks have had surgery. It is also good for breaking down fat cells in your body. Therefore the bed will be set on a different hertz other than universal healing,” Fritts explained.

Red light was first initiated by NASA and has been around since about the 1980s. A lot of chiropractors have red light but they’re in a wand form, Fritts said. They’re used for joint and muscle injuries/pain.

Trudy’s Yoga and Beyond currently holds eight one hour yoga sessions a week. Sessions do not require a prior registry and are open to everyone. Sessions are held Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday’s session is from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Fritts expects to add more sessions come fall. Trudy’s Yoga Studio and Beyond is located at One Piper Way, Suite 3B of the Piper Museum Building, in Lock Haven.

“I needed to do this again because it’s where my true self is — doing yoga and helping people,” she said.
